No stranger to the machinations of the CIA's top echelon, Muir hones all his skills and irreverent manner in order to find a way to free Bishop. As he embarks on his mission to free Bishop, Muir recalls how he recruited and trained the young rookie, at that time a sergeant in Vietnam, their turbulent times together as operatives and the woman who threatened their friendship.
It's April 14, 1991, the final day of work for CIA case agent Nathan Muir before he retires. It has been a job that has not made him opulently wealthy, he planning on using his life savings of $282,000 to purchase a retirement property in the Bahamas. This day, he is called by a task force led by Charles Harker and Troy Folger to provide any personal information on Tom Bishop, a CIA undercover field agent who has just been apprehended by the Chinese government in China, and who will be executed in twenty-four hours by the Chinese on charges of espionage unless the US government claims him, which if they do means answering to what was Bishop's unauthorized operation in China. Bishop, a former US Army sharpshooter, was recruited into the CIA as a contract agent by Muir, who acted as his trainer, mentor and case agent in his early CIA career, hence the reason for Muir being called by the task force to provide personal information which may not be in Bishop's official file. What Muir does not tell the task force is that he had heard about Bishop's predicament earlier by one of his CIA colleagues, Harry Duncan, who is currently working an operation in Hong Kong. Although the task force members do not come right out and say so, Muir knows they are working on a different agenda than him, they whose main goal is to protect an imminent trade negotiation between the US and China which means possibly sacrificing Bishop as collateral damage, while Muir is determined to stop the execution and ensure Bishop's safe return as one of CIA's own and as his friend. Muir spends much of the day with the task force, which takes up much of his time to achieve his goal, but which also allows him to feed the task force information or misinformation which may assist his own cause while gleaning information from the task force which he may not know. Assisting Muir outside the war room is his faithful assistant, Gladys Jennip. Getting Bishop back to safety also means that Muir has to figure out what was Bishop's operation in China.
Here&#39;s an atypical but enthralling thriller from sure-hand director Tony Scott which plays out most of its tale in various flashbacks, but is held together through an excellent leading turn from Robert Redford. Redford is an ageing CIA agent and on his last day of work before retirement (gee, where have we heard that one before?) he learns that his young protégé has been captured for spying in a Chinese prison and is due to be executed the following morning. Much of the film consists of him relating previous experiences and adventures to his superiors as the clock ticks down towards his partner&#39;s imminent death. Whilst this might not sound to be very interesting viewing, the flashbacks are invariably exciting and involve lots of secrecy, death, and open warfare in some cases (an excellent interlude in Beirut for example), elements all woven together well.<br/><br/>The present scenes of Redford using his own contacts and methods to help his captured chum are excellently portrayed and even if the film comes a little loose towards the ending, it still engages the senses through the quality of the acting. Here&#39;s a film with some fleshed-out characters brought to vivid life through the strong actors playing them. Redford and Pitt are excellent in their two very different roles, and we also get strong support from Catherine McCormack as Pitt&#39;s love interest and Stephen Dillane, excellently snide as an enemy of Redford&#39;s at the intelligence agency. Flashily directed by Scott and never lulling for a moment, this is an exciting and intelligent movie with plenty of incident and dynamism to recommend it.
Ok i&#39;ll give credit where it&#39;s due. OCCASIONALLY Redford gives us a film not only intelligent but also (gasp) ENTERTAINING. This, however, is not such a film. Sneakers (which was wrongfully ignored), Butch Cassidy, the Sting, The Electric Horseman, and The Last Castle are among his entertaining yet still quality films. Although this film may depict the real-life goings on of the spy world, for those of us who, since 1962, have been treated to a very different type of spy, and this bye the way covers most if not all of the moviegoing public, when we see spy we expect a solid story yes, but with action and intrigue. This film, for the most part, had all the event and suspense of a Bill Clinton speech. BLECHH!
With its cast of back-stabbing functionaries and desk jockeys, Spy Game makes the sport and hard work of espionage seem chillingly real.
Muir lies about his number of wives throughout the movie. He refers to agents and assets that served as cover wives, as his wives. He actually has only been married once to a Korean woman. His one wife stayed in Korea while Muir did two tours in South America. It&#39;s presumed that she has died much earlier. Harry Duncan is located in Hong Kong and played by David Hemmings. We seem him at the beginning of the movie calling Muir at home, and at the end of the movie negotiating the power outage in China. Operation Sideshow was run by the CIA to bug the Chinese side of the trade negotiations happening during the present day in the movie. Tran (the Chinese asset who escapes the prison at the beginning of the movie and is seen in a photograph later) is part of Sideshow, and Bishop piggybacks off this operation by convincing him to share prison schematics and rescue Hadley. Bishop was not a part of this operation, but rather was in China to free Hadley from the prison. She is the mother of the movie&#39;s director Tony Scott (and also mother of Ridley Scott).
